Gidoen Sundback is credited with the invention of the modern zip, circa 1913 or so I believe. A very useful concept it is too, but like any good invention only as good as the person using it. I offer this cautionary tale as a reminder to photographers, who in their haste to relocate sideways a dozen feet or so for a better shot forget to do their kit bag up properly. The fading light that induced the urgency is not to blame for my 24-120mm Nikon zoom falling on to the hard granite rocks to the left of Corbiere Lighthouse and then slowly but irretrievably trundling to the frothing sea that was encroaching rapidly onto my rocky ledge. I do however feel that Gidoen missed a trick by omitting the ‘self-closing’ feature from his invention!
